A film built openly on shamanism and pungsu (Korean geomancy) drew 11 million admissions, pulling a genre long treated as marginal into the centre of Korean cinemas. Abroad, the unfamiliar part was not the horror but Korean burial practice and the idea that land itself can be auspicious or not.
