The history of colonial rule is still an open question rather than a closed one. Court rulings and diplomacy have contradicted each other several times over the scope of compensation and apology, and in 2019 export controls set off a large movement not to buy Japanese goods. And yet over the same years both countries kept consuming each other's dramas, music and travel in volume — the friction and the traffic run side by side.
